With the world’s most famous skyline just a mile across the water, it is easy to regard Jersey City only as a launch pad to Manhattan and ignore the wonders of New Jersey’s second most populous town. Liberty State Park provides a spectacular viewing grounds for New York City, and Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are just a few hundred yards offshore and a short ferry ride away.

However, after taking a look at some of the local attractions, you may be tempted to stay. Liberty Park also offers picnic areas, nature trails, fishing and crabbing and launches for canoes and kayaks onto the Hudson River. The park also features the state-of-the art Liberty Science Center, which boasts the country’s biggest IMAX Dome Theater, and the rambling brick Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal. This was built in 1892 and played a crucial role in dispersing European immigrants around the country for over 60 years. It is now an interpretive center dedicated to those stories.

Nearby in Exchange Place stands the historic Colgate Clock, built in 1924 as the largest time keeper in the world—the minute hand alone weighs 2,200 pounds. Of course, there are also plenty of chances for sailing excursions, harbor cruises and, yes, trips to New York City.
