The first thing visitors will notice is city’s unique downtown core. The Pitchlascascotee River flows directly through town on its way west to the Gulf of Mexico. Eclectic riverside shops, restaurants and cafes give window-shopping and leisurely strolling an added charm. Exploring the town’s scenic riverfront is a popular pastime for locals and visitors alike.
Outside the city limits, anyone with a lust for fresh air and outdoor adventure can use New Port Richey as a base camp for exploring a trio of nearby parks.
The Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park sits just a few miles to the west and offers and abundance of well-paved trails, hiking trails, campgrounds, fishing holes and picnic facilities.
Anclote Key Preserve State Park is another popular if somewhat remote destination. Comprised of a set of small islands lying a few miles off-shore to the southwest, the pristine park is accessible by private boat or ferry service. The islands are completely undeveloped, so all water and food must be transported in with you for day-trips (and all litter must be transported back out).
Finally, the James E. Preserve sits almost directly in the center of town. At 80 acres it’s relatively small, but its close proximity to the city center makes it a popular destination year-round. It’s also common to see pods of dolphins and manatees making their way up the Pithlachascotee River and from the preserve’s grounds.
Part of the Greater Tampa Bay Area and its own large selection of attractions, this is the perfect spot to set up camp and embark on some wider, off-the-beaten-path exploring.
