To get a taste of Europe without leaving North America, plan a visit to Quebec. Once known as “New France,” Canada’s largest province retains French as the official language, and the architecture bears a European imprint. While visiting, you’ll soon see why this is called “la belle province” (the beautiful province).
Just outside of Québec City, the Montmorency Falls dazzle the senses, with a pedestrian bridge offering the chance to peer down from the top of the roaring 270-foot cascade. A little further outside of the city, the Jacques-Cartier National Park is home to glacier-carved valleys and panoramic mountain views. In eastern Québec, the forested Gaspé Peninsula extends into the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Located just a few hours outside of Montreal, the Laurentian Mountains are a spectacular spot for outdoor recreation. Mont-Tremblant National Park is a jackpot, with six rivers and over 400 lakes and streams, all surrounded by lush forests and mountain peaks. Fishing, paddling and hiking are popular activities in the park. Eastern Canada is renowned for its Atlantic salmon, and the Gaspé Peninsula is home to no fewer than 20 salmon rivers. Near Québec City, the waters of the St. Lawrence Seaway are chock-full of walleye. Don’t forget to head north, as Québec’s Far North offers tremendous hunting and fishing. Moose, caribou, whitetail deer and black bear flourish. Non-Canadians must hire an outfitter.
Montreal’s dazzling skyline can best be appreciated from the height of Mount Royal (for which the city was named). Canada’s second-largest city is known for its Parisian ambiance and artsy culture. Montreal is packed with history and charm, with all the vibrancy of a 21st-century city. Meanwhile, the province’s capital of Québec City retains an Old World feel, with cozy cobblestone lanes lined with boutiques and cafes. The Bastion-de-la-Reine Park offers superb views of the cityscape.
