1. North Conway
Starting Point
Gateway to the White Mountains, North Conway offers up more than its fair share of outdoors excitement. In winter, head to Wildcat Mountain Resort for some of the Northeast’s best ski trails. The nearby Moat Mountain Smoke House and Brewing Co. can handle all of your après-ski needs. In warmer months, hikers can take the trail to the top of Mount Washington, the Northeast’s tallest peak. Drive the Mount Washington Auto Road that winds its way to the eastern summit or ride the Cog Railway that ascends the west side. Both routes deliver spectacular vistas without demanding a rugged, backcountry hike.

2. Twin Mountain

Another four-season destination, this tiny hamlet serves up trails for hiking and biking, wildlife sightings and bird watching galore. Bald Mountain and Sugarloaf are two nearby trails that top out with stunning views of the White Mountains, and at two and three miles, respectively, they’re comfortable routes for most visitors. Try a visit to Echo Lake in Franconia Notch State Park to catch a glimpse of both the moose and peregrine falcons that call it home. You can’t beat visiting in autumn, when the trees put on one of the most vibrant, colorful displays of foliage imaginable.
3. Lincoln-Woodstock

This is a great jumping-off point for family adventure. Your only struggle will be packing it all in. Start your day at the Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves, where you’ll discover pristine waterfalls and underground pools. The nighttime lantern tours are also exceptional. Next, plot a course through the winding forests abutting the picturesque Pemigewasset River on the Hobo Railroad. The historic ride is considered one of the best attractions for kids in the region.

4. Tamworth

Nestled between the state’s lake and mountain districts, Tamworth offers the serene setting and quaint New England charm that has long made it popular among artists and poets. In summertime, make sure to visit the Barnstormers, the oldest summer repertory theater in the country, for a unique collection of performances. A quick hike to Mount Chocorua—said to be the most photographed mountain in America—serves up spectacular views of the Whites, lakes and fall foliage that make the Tamworth area so magnificent.
