New Jersey: Chow down on the boardwalk

No beach trip is complete without a boardwalk snack, from greasy cheesesteak to sweet taffy. Nosh on sugary and salty treats, and then burn off the calories with a stroll along the shore. You’ll feel like a kid again as you dive into rich Jersey fare.

1. Point Pleasant

Starting Point

The sun, the sea, the sand—what more could you ask for, except maybe a cold brew and something to nosh on? That’s where Jenks North Inlet Bar comes in, a relaxing beach bar secluded on the Point Pleasant inlet so you never have to leave the beach for a meal or a drink. Jenks offers signature cocktails and cold craft beers you can enjoy with sliders, wings or fried seafood.

2. Seaside Heights

The best cheesesteaks can be found at Steaks Unlimited, an institution in the area that serves up eight hearty steak options. Go traditional with an original cheesesteak, or spice it up with a buffalo chicken cheesesteak. Maybe a Seaside Tony is more your style, topped with the restaurant’s original deep-fried cheese balls.

3. Atlantic City

61.7 miles, 56 minutes

No boardwalk stroll would be complete without the saltwater taffy—a boardwalk tradition. Fralinger’s Salt Water Taffy is the taffy you remember—soft, creamy, tasty and chewy—in a rainbow of colors and a variety of flavors including banana, molasses, peppermint and root beer. Taffy is also available with filled centers, chocolate-sealed and sugar-free.

Ocean City routinely ranks high when travel publications compile their lists of top family-friendly beaches. Its boardwalk is one of the most beloved spots in America, with two amusement parks and endless food choices. Kohr Brothers Frozen Custard is the ultimate Ocean City boardwalk food, available in a variety of flavors like vanilla, chocolate, mint and peanut butter.

5. Cape May

35.1 miles, 36 minutes

While walking the beach in Cape May, drop in for lunch at Zoe’s Beachfront Eatery. Menu items include turkey and beef roasted from scratch, along with homemade pancakes, muffins and a variety of tasty omelets. Then head down the road a bit with a couple of cool destinations in mind. Sea Shell Ice Cream offers huge sundaes and tasty cones. Cool Scoops is a 1950s-themed ice cream parlor offering more than 30 delicious flavors.
