Forget the raucous parties of MTV’s “Jersey Shore.” This seaside haven at the southern tip of the Garden State is a relaxing, historic destination with a great dining scene and a reputation for some of the East Coast’s best beaches. From tours of Victorian homes to lighthouse hikes and sunset treasure hunts, Cape May has a little something for everyone and, as one of the oldest resort towns in the country, a lot of experience making sure you discover it.
Surrounded by ocean on three sides, fishing is the name of the game in Cape May. Many half- and full-day charter boat rentals are available in the harbor for inshore, deep-sea and canyon fishing adventures. In the summer, stick around for the weekend boat parades that bring the celebration offshore. For a unique maritime experience, try the saltmarsh catamaran tours that wind through the back-bay channels. You’ll learn about the pristine landscape and catch glimpses of the vibrant wildlife that have found homes in Cape May County.
For birders, the area needs no introduction. Considered one of the top viewing sites for migratory birds, the Cape May Bird Observatory is a must-visit for fans of our feathered friends. More than 400 species have been spotted at Cape May Point — so many it’s become home to the World Series of Birding. Novices can follow the marked trails.
The best way to see the one-of-a-kind Victorian homes that line the Cape May Historic District is by trolley. Hop on at the Washington Street pedestrian mall and follow along as guides share the history of the area’s unique architecture.
For a different perspective, try the 199 steps that lead to the top of Cape May Lighthouse. It’s become a tradition for first-time guests to peer out over the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay from the lighthouse keeper’s perch. Folks with a fear of heights can check out the lighthouse’s Oil House and Museum Shop.
