Once little more than a rest stop halfway between Minneapolis and Duluth, Hinckley has forged a place as a destination all its own. From famous caramel rolls to Vegas-style jackpots to endless miles of trails through a pristine landscape, there’s a little something for everyone. But the biggest attraction of all might be the locals’ laid-back Midwestern charm.
An adventurer’s paradise awaits just 15 miles to the east of Hinckley at St. Croix State Park. There are miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, and the park’s two rivers — the St. Croix River and its tributary, the Kettle River — are perfect for serene canoe trips and fishing excursions. Rugged adventurers can test the rapids at Banning State Park, but don’t worry, there’s plenty of whitewater fun for all experience levels.
At 70 miles, the Willard Munger State Trail is the longest paved trail system in the state (and third longest in the country) and cuts right through Hinckley. Hike or cycle the flat, easily accessible route past untouched waterfalls, rustic towns and stunning gorges. Cross dramatic bridges to see stunning views of waterways below.
Visitors to the gleaming Grand Casino Hinckley complex can try their hands at the table games and state-of-the-art slot machines, or save their winnings for the outdoor concert series that welcomes world-class performers throughout the summer months. Bargain hunters can try to get lucky at the Antiques America Mall, which boasts 10,000 square feet of vintage collectibles and one-of-a-kind finds you won’t see anywhere else. If you work up an appetite searching for hidden treasures, make sure to head to Tobies Restaurant and Bakery for one of its world-famous caramel rolls. Get there early — the bakery line fills up fast!
Adjacent to the Grand Casino Hinckley, the Grand National Golf Club challenges golf enthusiasts with 18 holes laid out among hills, creeks and trees.
The Snake River Fur Post, located in Pine City just 15 miles south of Hinckley on Interstate 35, is a historic site that offers a gallery, heritage trails and more. Visitors can catch reenactments of life in the days of the fur trade and learn about the native Ojibwe tribe.
