Grande Prairie

Grande Prairie is the vibrant regional hub of the Peace Country and is one of the fastest-growing cities in Canada. The town boasts amenities and facilities normally associated with a much larger center but still has that small-town hospitality.

So Many Reasons to Stay and Play

Grande Prairie is the last major center before Alaska and the regional center for northwestern Alberta and northeastern British Columbia. Make your first stop at the Visitor Information Centre, open year- round, providing regional and provincial information, a gift shop and two unique events offered in the Summer months: Welcome Wednesdays (free drinks and snacks all day) and Free Rotary Bus Tours. There is also the Heritage Discovery museum to peruse free of charge.

Shopping and History

Grande Prairie is a major retail hub for the area, with shopping malls, big box stores and unique stores in the downtown core. Take advantage of no provincial sales tax and stock up on supplies. Attractions abound in and around the city. The Grande Prairie Art Gallery is a Class A Art Gallery, and there are three spectacular museums in the city and two museums en route to Alaska. Outside of town, the  South Peace Centennial Museum is a 40 acre agricultural pioneer village that features hundreds of restored antique tractors, rare steam engines, horse drawn wagons and antique automobiles.

The Great Outdoors

With over 1,600 acres of parkland throughout the city, there is endless opportunity for enjoying the great outdoors. The region boasts a four-seasons playground with many indoor and outdoor activities to keep residents and visitors busy throughout the year. Whether it’s surfing at the state-of-the-art Eastlink Centre, taking in a concert or show at Revolution Place or taking advantage of the many parks, golf courses or green spaces, there are lots of options.

Get With Nature

Surrounding the City is the county of Grande Prairie, home to diverse ecosystems: rich prairie, abundant rivers, creeks and small lakes, a mixed boreal forest and the province’s northernmost badlands. You’ll see the majestic trumpeter swans that migrate to the lakes to nest and raise their young, or mule deer, moose, elk, white-tailed deer and bears. The region is home to many events throughout the year. Don’t miss the annual Stompede from May through June, with a slate of events that include chuck wagon races and barrel riding.

Dino Discoveries

Just 25 minutes by car southwest of Grande Prairie, Pipestone Creek is one of the richest dinosaur bone beds in the world. The Phillip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, named after Canada’s leading paleontologist, Dr. Philip Currie, was unveiled in 2015.
