Places Welcoming You
With endless rolling hills, long, winding rivers and a hearty dose of German culture, Texas Hill Country is the perfect setting for an epic road trip. Get a dose of cowboy culture with a side of brats and country music in the heart of the Lone Star state.
1. Austin
Starting Point
“Keep it weird” in the capital of Texas and dance the night away at one of the many music venues over on 6th Street. Try some of that famous Texas barbecue for lunch at Franklin Barbecue, but expect to wait up to two hours (trust us, it’s worth it). Grab a drink over on Rainey Street, where bungalow houses have been converted into hip bars. If you want to get back to nature, take a walk around Lake Austin or even take out a boat and go fishing.
2. Fredericksburg
Drive 78 miles • 1 hour, 32 minutes
No, you’re not in Germany. You’ve just entered Fredericksburg, Texas. This town proudly showcases its German heritage at the Pioneer Museum, which features settlers’ homesteads and artifacts. Listen to some German polka while you drain pints and devour schnitzel over at the Auslander Restaurant and Biergarten. Further north is Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, where a massive pink granite dome gives climbers spectacular views of the surrounding rugged landscape.
3. Bandera
Drive 49 miles • 56 minutes
On your way out of Fredericksburg, stop at Stonehenge II, a plaster replica of the original Stonehenge. When you get to Bandera, start your visit to “The Cowboy Capital of the World” at one of the area’s many dude ranches for horseback riding and a taste of ranch life. Shop for cowboy hats and other western wear and souvenirs along Bandera’s Main Street.
4. Boerne
Drive 25 miles • 33 minutes
Find more German heritage in the town of Boerne. Shop and grab some food on Main Street, also known as “Hauptstrasse,” which consists of limestone buildings built by the German immigrants that now house boutiques, antique shops and restaurants. To see some natural limestone stalagmites and stalactites, head to the Cave Without a Name.
5. San Antonio
Drive 31 miles • 36 minutes
End your trip in bustling San Antonio, home of the Alamo. The 18th-century mission was the site of a famous siege as well as a flashpoint in the infamous battle for independence from Mexico. A stroll on the San Antonio River Walk is a must, with tons of restaurants and cafes lining the banks. For a little history mixed with nature, head on over to San Antonio Missions National Historical Park for a ranger-led guided tour.
