1. Frankenmuth

Starting Point • Food, History, Shopping

Get your fill of rollicking German culture with a visit to Frankenmuth (known as Michigan’s Little Bavaria). There’s a full menu of attractions, from Bronner’s — the world’s largest Christmas store — to breweries and restaurants that serve up Bavarian flavors. Don’t miss a photo opportunity at the Holz Brucke bridge, the longest covered bridge in Michigan, which crosses the Cass River and boasts distinctive Bavarian craftsmanship.

 

2. Bay City

Drive 21.2 miles, 30 minutes • Food, History, Outdoor Recreation, Shopping

Sitting on the banks of Saginaw River, Bay City serves up a smorgasbord of family-friendly attractions. The Antique Toy and Fire Truck Museum delights adults as well as kids. Discover more fantastic relics at the Bay Antique Center. Get out of the shops and hit the lovely riverfront walk for strolling, cycling or jogging. Dining options include everything from pub fare to freshly caught seafood.

 

3. Mount Pleasant

Drive 46.1 miles, 56 minutes • History, Sports

Home to the sprawling Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant lives up to its lovely name with scenic landscapes.  Learn about the area’s Native Americans heritage at Ziibiwing Center, which highlights the culture and history of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe along with other tribes in the region. Golfers will find lots to keep them busy, with 12 courses in the aptly named Central Swing area.
