Spotlight: Saratoga Springs

Making a refreshing stop in New York’s capital of racing and revitalization

From sparkling mineral water to thoroughbreds racing on dirt tracks, Saratoga Springs is a destination worth exploring. Its spring-fed wells have been a popular destination for Native American tribes, settlers and others looking for a refreshing retreat.

The community of Saratoga Springs is steeped in Revolutionary War history. Saratoga National Historical Park preserves the site of a pivotal battle between the British and American forces that resulted in the surrender of the Redcoats.

Take a battlefield tour and explore the restored house of American General Philip Schuyler, who helped establish early canal systems in the U.S.  Visit the Saratoga Monument in the Village of Victory, and marvel at the workmanship of the 155-foot obelisk commemorating Revolutionary battles of the region.

Soothing Waters

Embark on the ultimate getaway at Saratoga Spa State Park, where two pools invite visitors to relax, and where a two-course golf complex welcomes guests to hone their driving skills on the 18-hole championship course. Take a little post-play indulgence at the Roosevelt Baths and Spa, where mineral waters refresh weary muscles.

If horse races get your heart pounding, head to the Saratoga Race Course and enjoy the excitement in a historic setting. The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame houses exhibits highlight the history of thoroughbred racing through artifacts, art, memorabilia and photos.

Taste some of the best locally grown fare that Saratoga Springs has to offer at the local farmer’s market and sip on locally crafted wines at one of the area’s wineries. The Children’s Museum in Saratoga is a dream destination for kids who want to be creative and learn about the world around them in a hands-on, interactive setting.

Saratoga Sings

Catch a performance at Saratoga Performing Arts Center and marvel at the beauty that surrounds the amphitheater, which is built into a natural bowl shape surrounded by stands of pines and is surrounded by hiking trails, natural springs and geysers.

Saratoga’s public gardens are artfully crafted spaces. The historic Congress Park invites guests to enjoy a picnic on the lawn and take a spin on the wooden carousel. Congress Park is home to Canfield Casino and the Saratoga Springs History Museum.

The abundance of water sources around Saratoga Springs also means great fishing opportunities. Public lakes and ponds invite anglers to try their luck catching smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike and more.
