Bozeman

Bozeman may be smack in the middle of the Rocky Mountains, but the hip Western town feels anything but remote. Hot spring resorts, a symphony orchestra and a burgeoning culinary scene offer big-city luxuries, while its proximity to Yellowstone National Park promises all sorts of recreational options in every season.

Dino and digital discoveries

The Museum of the Rockies houses a remarkable c ollection of North American dinosaur fossils, included the largest T-Rex skull ever found. Stop by the Hall of Giants to meet the biggest dinosaurs to ever roam Montana and the Bowman Dinosaur Viewing Lab to see paleologists at work. Afterward, immerse yourself in the history of communications, computing and artificial intelligence at the American Computer and Robotics Museum. Highlights include the original Apollo Moon Mission Guidance Computer and documents from Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Graham Bell and other prominent figures of the Information Age.

Fly-fishing waters

The Gallatin River winds through town and descends into the Gallatin Canyon. It’s a renowned fly-fishing destination thanks to its spectacular scenery and healthy stocks of mountain whitefish, brown trout and rainbow trout. You’ll find many campsites and local lodges that cater to anglers along the river. Another popular spot is the Yellowstone River. This area is usually fished from a drift boat but you can cast a line from shore at Mallard’s Rest fishing access site.

Backcountry explorations

Yellowstone National Park is just a stone’s throw away from town. The country’s oldest park offers every outdoor activity imaginable, from hiking and mountain climbing to wildlife viewing and horseback riding. Don’t leave without visiting the kaleidoscopic hot springs and watching the famous Old Faithful geyser spew water up to 56 meters high. Less than 60 miles away is Big Sky Resort. Ski down powder slopes or taking a thrilling snowmobiling tour in the winter and try ziplining, whitewater rafting and mountain biking when temperatures warm up.
