Places Welcoming You

From one of the world’s great cities to one of its most iconic natural wonders, you won’t be starving for sights and sounds on this jam-packed road trip through southern Ontario. Between Toronto’s buzzing neighborhoods and lakefront green spaces, the majesty of Niagara Falls’ jaw-dropping beauty and history on a grand scale at Old Fort Erie, this two-hour route brings you face-to-face with the best of the Heartland Province.

1. Toronto

Starting Point

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that Canada’s largest and most diverse city is chock full of cultural, historical and culinary gems. Start your visit atop the CN Tower, where the sweeping views of Lake Ontario (and the death-defying option to walk on the outer edge) will literally take your breath away. For the opposite effect, there’s always a 20-minute ferry to the Toronto Islands, where you can rent bikes and soak in incredible skyline views all while feeling like you’ve escaped the hustle and bustle of big city life.

2. Niagara Falls

Drive 85 miles • 1 hours, 32 minutes

You can hear the thunderous roar of Niagara Falls before you can see the majestic collection of waterfalls that make up this iconic destination and the roar only grows louder as you get close enough to soak in the spray of the Niagara River’s 165-foot descent. The Cave of the Winds tour lets visitors on the falls’ U.S. side (you can access both the Canadian and U.S. sides via the Rainbow Bridge) descend to the foot of Bridal Veil Falls, where a veritable hurricane of wind and water showcase the raw power of nature.

3. Fort Erie

Drive 19 miles • 22 minutes

On the banks of Lake Erie, the Old Fort Erie stands as a testament to some of the most pivotal battles of the War of 1812. Costumed reenactors portraying British, American and First Nations soldiers give expert tours of fort and grounds, shedding light on the strategic importance of the site. Musket demonstrations and hands-on exhibits help bring the history to life, while lucky visitors during the annual reenactment of the Siege of Old Fort Erie are treated to a spectacular display that draws thousands of history buffs each year.
