Explore the iconic coastline of Cape Cod and immerse yourself in colonial history. From Sandwich to Provincetown, this trip will make you feel like a true New Englander.

 

1. Sandwich

Starting Point

Sandwich is the oldest town on Cape Cod and was once known as “Glasstown.” Glass has been made in Sandwich for over two centuries. Stop by the Sandwich Glass Museum to hear about this history and view live glass-blowing demonstrations. You’ll also want to make time to explore the Shawme-Crowell State Forest and hike or bike the many trails there. Beach lovers will feel right at home on Sandwich’s two saltwater and three freshwater beaches.

 

 

2. Barnstable

Drive 14 miles, 20 minutes

In Barnstable, you’ll find a lovely coastal community and with beaches once walked by President John F. Kennedy and his family. You can learn more about the 35th President at the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum in Barnstable. Next, you’ll want to hit the beach at the Sandy Neck Gate House Beach. This six-mile long shore has plenty of room for sunbathers. For the more adventurous, bring your ATV and explore the off-road vehicle trails that are very popular to both residents and visitors.

 

 

3. Wellfleet

Drive 34 miles, 48 minutes

Wellfleet offers panoramic views of salt marshes, the Atlantic Ocean and pine woodlands. All of this diversity attracts a wide array of wildlife. Stop by the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and hop on five-miles of universally accessible trails. Be sure to visit the nature center for exhibits and aquariums.

 

4. Provincetown

Drive 15 miles, 22 minutes

This seaside community boasts the notoriety of being the site of the Mayflower’s landing in 1602. The first thing you’ll see as you come close to Provincetown is the Pilgrim Monument. This 252-foot stone monolith is the tallest granite structure in the United States. Visit the monument and learn about the pilgrims struggle, and then climb to the top for some amazing views of the area.
