Welcome to Maryland
Between Maryland’s picture-perfect beaches in the east and the sweeping Appalachian Mountains in the west, the Old Line State contains multitudes of possibilities. Coined “America in Miniature,” the Maryland is a microcosm of the United States, complete with dramatic landscapes, historic attractions, bustling cities and charming small towns.
Appalachian Gateway
Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventure or quiet reflection, you’ll find all of it on Maryland’s segment of the Appalachian Trail. Covering 40 miles north-south from Pen Mar to the Potomac River, this public footpath leads you to historic sites and gorgeous overlooks. Trekking from Greenbrier State Park to Annapolis Rocks and from Gathland State Park to Weverton Cliffs are popular day trips along the trail. You can also embark on the Western Maryland Rail Trail.
Anglers will want to take advantage of world-class fly fishing on the Savage River. The waterway spans 30 miles, with the upper river stocked with rainbow trout and the lower river populated with wild brown and brook trout. If you find yourself in the Chesapeake Bay, grab a string, bait and net to catch up to two dozen crabs with no permit required. Not far from the Chesapeake Bay is the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Approximately 26,000 acres of forest, marshes and ponds are home to the endangered Delmarva Peninsula fox squirrels and migratory birds.
Harbors and Beaches
With its thriving arts scene, vibrant foodie culture, historic neighborhoods and ample museums, it’s easy to see why visitors fall head over heels for Baltimore. Meander along the brick pathways of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor to reach a plethora of parks, restaurants and shops. Popular stops include the National Aquarium, the American Visionary Art Museum and Maryland Science Center. Thirty miles to the south, Annapolis’s rich naval heritage and sweeping Chesapeake Bay views make it a popular spot for lovers of the open water.
When summer rolls around, both locals and tourists flock to Ocean City, situated along the state’s Atlantic coast. The resort town’s three-mile boardwalk runs parallel to gorgeous beaches and is lined with shops, arcades, amusement parks and restaurants. For more carefree beach days, head to nearby Assateague State Park. Nestled on Assateague Island, this oceanfront park is famous for its wild horses and is perfect for water sports.
