Welcome to Delaware
As America’s second smallest state, Delaware is often overlooked — a mistake too many travelers make. Bursting with postcard-worthy beaches, gently rolling hills, lavish mansions and quaint coastal towns, Delaware packs ample adventure into a compact space. Rich colonial history flows through its scenic seaside shores and inland landscapes. Delaware’s founding fathers were the first to sign the U.S. Constitution, resulting in the nickname, the First State. Delaware’s past can still be experienced as historic architecture and colonial towns are peppered throughout the state.
See You at the Beach
Whether you seek sun, scenic views or solitude, know that you’ll find them all in rich supply in Southern Delaware. For the ultimate beach day, head to Delaware Seashore State Park. Featuring six miles of ocean coastline and dunes, this property attracts everyone from beach bums and anglers to surfers and boaters. If you want to get away from it all, make your way to the old lighthouse at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes. The vantage point from this tower dazzles with panoramic views of the pristine coast. Take a minute here to watch frothy waves crash into the shore, see hawks fly through the sky or observe shorebirds feed their young in dune nests. Afterward, hike or bike along the three-mile trail that circles around the park. Don’t miss the World War II-era coastal batteries on the shore.
Unwind in Charming Coastal Towns
Rehoboth Beach is considered one of the best beaches in the country, probably because of its eclectic boardwalk and friendly, relaxed vibe. Packed with food stands, funky restaurants and chic boutiques, the mile-long boardwalk is the perfect place to take advantage of Delaware’s tax-free shopping. You can also dive into the town’s history at Rehoboth Beach Museum. Home to vintage bathing suits, postcards, photos and maps, this museum shows the history of beach fun and the development of the town’s tourism cache.
Off the boardwalk, visitors can take their pick from kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing, walking trails and more. If you’re visiting in September, watch local artists create incredible sculptures during the area’s popular Sandcastle Contest. Just a short walk away lies Dewey Beach, a town famous for its culinary delights and exciting nightlife. When the sun goes down, dance the night away to live music or relax with movies and bonfires at the beach.
Rubber meets the road at Dover International Speedway, one of the Eastern Seaboard’s top-rated NASCAR tracks. Watch as world-class drivers circle the Monster Mile at breathtaking speeds. Before the racers start their engines, enjoy tailgating outside the stadium in designated RV lots.
Traveling with the kids? Nestled along the southern border of Delaware, Fenwick Island offers family fun on both land and water. Race go-karts and speed down waterslides at Viking Amusements and Thunder Lagoon Waterpark. Or spend your days fishing, windsurfing and sunbathing at Fenwick Island State Park, home to trails, surfing and the Indian River Marina.
