1. Staunton
Starting Point • Entertainment, History
Start your Ultimate RV Trip right in the heart of Virginia’s lovely Shenandoah Valley. Staunton’s a charming town with many historic and cultural attractions. The Frontier Cultural Museum documents life in America’s early days. Visit Woodrow Wilson’s Birthplace right in Staunton’s historic downtown area. See his Presidential Library and Museum, too. And be sure to check out the American Shakespeare Center and enjoy today’s productions of The Bard’s Elizabethan-era plays.
2. Richmond
Drive 108 miles, 1 hour, 43 minutes • History, Nature
The Richmond area was settled in the early 1600’s and was important in America’s Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Today, it’s a thriving metropolis with lots of southern charm. See the American Civil War Museum. Check out Maymont, once the palatial home of wealthy industrialists. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is nationally acclaimed (and free!). Tour the State Capitol and stroll lovely Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.
3. Williamsburg
Drive 51.2 miles, 52 minutes • Entertainment, History
There’s so much to do around Williamsburg. Colonial Williamsburg is America’s largest, most authentic, outdoor museum of colonial life. The surrounding area is home to the American Revolution Museum, the Yorktown Battlefield and nearby Jamestown Settlement. There are several theme parks to entertain the whole family from shows and roller coasters at Busch Gardens to waterpark thrills at Water Country.
4. Virginia Beach

With a beautiful setting on the Atlantic Ocean, Virginia Beach has big, broad sandy beaches with lots to explore. Stroll the enormous boardwalk — all 59 blocks. You’ll want to see historic and popular First Landing State Park where Jamestown settlers landed in 1607. Downtown features every imaginable dining and shopping venue. Inland, there’s a great aquarium a couple miles from downtown.
5. Cape Charles
Drive 46.5 miles, 1 hour • History, Nature, Outdoor Recreation
Cape Charles, on Chesapeake Bay, is rich with late-Victorian and early 20th-century architecture — the whole town’s on state and national historic registers. Get a historical overview at the Cape Charles Museum, then tour the Town Harbor waterfront. See Cape Charles and Cape Henry Lights (lighthouses) at the mouth of the bay. Commune with Nature at the Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge.
