Places Welcoming You
A place where all four seasons can be enjoyed, Vermont appeals to everyone, regardless of your weather preferences. With outdoor activities to enjoy any time of the year, this state is truly a gem for lovers of the outdoors. And with the fresh farms Vermont offers, foodies will love it here as well.
1. Montpelier
Starting point • Entertainment, Food
Although more like a large village than a city, Montpelier is the smallest state capital in the United States. But don’t be fooled into thinking that this town, with a population of 8,000 people, is a sleepy New England backwater. Montpelier packs a dynamic downtown that’s filled with beautiful bookstores, vibrant boutiques and some truly wonderful places to dine. Take a nice stroll through the town and enjoy the relaxing vibe and warm people of this New England state.
2. Woodstock
Drive 53.9 miles, 1 hour • Entertainment, Outdoor Recreation, Shopping
On the banks of the Ottauquechee River and on the Vermont Scenic Byway, Woodstock is a small town with a great deal of charm. This town’s primary claim to fame is the fact that it is a gateway to Vermont’s only national park: the Marsh – Billings – Rockefeller National Historical Park, a prime leaf-peeping destination during October. Woodstock also boasts several covered bridges, great restaurants and cute shops.
3. Manchester
Drive 57.1 miles, 1 hour, 25 minutes • Outdoor Recreation, Shopping, Food, History, Culture
Known as a stellar resort town, Manchester is home to fabulous skiing and upscale outlet shopping. But its beginnings were a bit different. President Abraham Lincoln, along with his wife Mary Todd Lincoln and their son, came to Manchester during the Civil War. Their son later returned here to build a mansion. Aside from history, Manchester offers culture, outdoor recreation and the perfect place to unplug and relax, especially with its close proximity to both New York City and Boston. Wine, nature and fun mix seamlessly in this small town, making it a must-see.
