Whether you’re after a day at the races or a chilled-out vacation for the whole family, Upstate New York will provide. This itinerary packs in mineral springs, lakefront fun and Revolutionary War history all in under 100 miles.

1. Saratoga Springs

Nestled in the foothills of Upstate New York’s Adirondacks, Saratoga Springs is a lovely city known for its healing thermal waters and its historic horse-racing venue. The city is most popular during the summer months, when the Saratoga Race Course is at its most active, but travelers descend here throughout the year to go shopping, museum hopping or indulge in spa treatments aided by the Saratoga Springs’s famously curative waters.

2. Lake George

A popular summer getaway, particularly among families, Lake George and its surrounding area is a great place to experience New York State’s great outdoors. Popular activities include boating and swimming right on the namesake lake, hiking on the 3.2-mile Prospect Mountain trail and even hot-air ballooning high above the region. Kids will love the 35-plus slides and other water activities at Water Slide World, while grown-ups will likely enjoy imbibing at the Adirondack Winery Tasting Room.

3. Fort Ticonderoga

Drive 55.9 minutes, 1 hour, 4 minutes • Entertainment, History

Anyone with an interest in military history will likely be enthralled by Fort Ticonderoga (AKA Fort Cariollon), a French-built fort on the banks of Lake Champlain that dates back to Seven Years’ War in the mid 18th-century. It fell into ruins for many years until 1908, when it was restored and reopened as a tourist attraction. Today the fort features a wide range of exhibits on everything from artillery to medicine along with regular historic reenactments.
