Snowbird Tips: Staying Healthy in Your Roost

Everyone eats a little more and exercises a little less while on vacation. If you want to stay fit and healthy as a snowbird, you definitely can’t treat the entire winter season as an extended vacation.

Instead, think of your snowbird destination as your home away from home…and establish healthy routines just like you do in your sticks and bricks abode.

1. Balance eating in with eating out.

It is so much fun to embrace the local food culture in your snowbird destination. But eating every meal out can have a negative impact on your health. Instead, seek out farmer’s markets and learn how to make simple, fresh meals in your RV. Evanne Schmarder of the RV Cooking Show gives great tips for easy, healthy RV meals.

2. Incorporate activity into your daily routines.

Little things can make a big difference, so think about how you can get in a few more steps during your everyday activities. Walk or ride a bike instead of hopping on that golf cart. When you go grocery shopping, pick a spot a bit farther away in the parking lot. Make a morning or evening stroll a regular part of your day.

3. Take advantage of organized activities at your RV Park.

Many snowbird RV parks have an amazing array of activities available on a daily basis. Join the golf club, take a water aerobics class, or get centered with a daily yoga session.

4. Embrace new recreational opportunities.

Even if you were never particularly sporty, the snowbird lifestyle offers a wonderful opportunity to try out new activities. Learn how to play tennis for the first time in your life, or join a local hiking club.

Staying healthy and fit during your snowbird season will help you enjoy the wonderful opportunities available in your winter destination of choice. Embrace staying warm…and staying active year round.
