Fishing

With more than 50 miles of Lake Erie shoreline, the county’s shore is one of the most popular areas for walleye and perch in the world. Come over and catch a few, then sample these Lake Erie delicacies at one of the area’s fine dining establishments.
River Raisin Heritage Trail
Along this eight-mile corridor, paved hike-bike trails provide safe and scenic routes to walk, run, cycle and in-line skate along the beautiful River Raisin. The trail connects major historic sites, state and local parks, nationally significant buildings and ecological features. Parking areas and facilities can be found along the trails for your convenience.
Golf
There is no better way to relax and enjoy the outdoors than an afternoon of golf. And Monroe County makes a compelling case for being the “Golf Capital of Michigan.” With more than two dozen courses to choose from, visitors can take their picks of easy-to-challenging fairways, all surrounded by lush Michigan landscapes.
Hunting
On the shores of Lake Erie, Pointe Mouillee State Game Area is one of the most respected waterfowl locations in Michigan. Consisting of 4,040 acres, it is one of the largest freshwater marsh restoration projects in the world. Along with exceptional waterfowl hunting, its numerous bird species and habitat diversity make it an important birding site in the Midwest. bald eagles, black-billed plovers, glossy ibises, osprey and whimbrels are unique species that inhabit Pointe Mouillee throughout the year. Along with many recreational opportunities that are present, Pointe Mouillee also has an annual waterfowl festival in September.
Located on Teal and Lulu Roads in Petersburg, the Petersburg State Game Area is 500 acres of managed game area representing one of the last Michigan sites of native wet-sand prairie habitat. The area is also open for walking and dog runs.

History
Monroe County was established in July 1817, as one of the first steps in the organization of Michigan Territory after the war of 1812. The area was fought over by British and American forces during the 1812 Battle of River Raisin, and a war memorial stands in the spot where American forces achieved victory.
As one of Michigan’s oldest communities, historic treasures abound, giving Monroe County both national and global appeal. Notably, George Custer, the U.S. Cavalry general who perished in 1876 at the Battle of Little Bighorn in Montana, is one of the county’s native sons.
