Florida’s Rare Coastal Dune Lakes

Here’s a fine place to ride out the current winter storm – the Scenic Highway 30A area of Florida. Although the beaches are beautiful, they’re a lot colder than they look – wind chill of 9 degrees this morning!

Eastern Lake is a Coastal Dune Lake – a highly unusual natural freshwater lake that exists right next to the Gulf.

Coastal Dune Lakes are very rare worldwide. Yet the 30A area has several, a unique geographical characteristic it shares with places in Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar, and Oregon.

We love visiting the lakes because they offer an unusual confluence of freshwater and saltwater ecologies.

Saltwater and organisms sometimes flow back into the lake from the Gulf.

We took this photo with the LoLoHo Drone.
