Carlisle, PA: Historic Town, Contemporary Appeal

Strolling through the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center.

Carlisle has called itself “America’s Most Historic Town” with ties to George Washington (he made the Carlisle Barracks the Continental Army’s arsenal), Molly Pitcher (the Revolutionary War heroine lived and is buried here), the Civil War (the town was shelled during the Battle of Gettysburg) and Jim Thorpe (America’s greatest athlete graduated from the Carlisle Indian Industrial School). All of these sites and many Colonial buildings in the Carlisle Historic District can be visited today.

Planning a visit? Stay at  Mountain Creek Campground.

Gifford Pinchot State Park to the south boasts one of the prettiest lakes in South Central Pennsylvania, and the popular Flat Rock Trail in Colonel Denning State Park leads to the top of Blue Mountain and stunning views of the Cumberland Valley. At Waggoner’s Gap, an outcropping on Kittaninny Ridge provides some of the best raptor migration viewing in the East each fall.

An event at the Carlisle Fairgrounds.
