Superlative Stays—Albany, New York

New York State Capitol, Albany

Although New York City garners all of the attention, the Empire State’s capital, Albany, boasts compelling treasures in its own right.

Located at the head of navigation on the Hudson River, Albany grew so fast after the completion of the Erie Canal in the 1820s that the New York capital became the ninth largest city in the United States. The centerpiece of today’s government complex is the Empire State Plaza, which Governor Nelson Rockefeller committed two billion dollars to building in the 1960s.

Check out these Albany attractions:

• The Egg Performing Arts Center stands out as the most distinctive of the cluster of International Style buildings. Guided tours are available of the chateau-like New York State Capitol across the street.

Tulips in the Park

• The outdoor heart of the city beats in historic Washington Park with 136 sculpted acres of activity fields, gardens and statuary. The city’s celebration of its Dutch heritage, the Tulip Festival, takes place here each spring over Mother’s Day weekend. The kick-off event is always the traditional Dutch ceremony of “scrubbing the streets.”

• Lark Street functions as the cultural hub of the Capital Region with cafes and galleries housed in heritage 19th century brownstones. LarkFest in the autumn is upstate new York’s largest one-day open air fiesta.
