Can I buy a ticket from Ketchikan to Haines and get off at different ports and just get back on to continue my trip?

Stefan,

Yes, this is the way we suggest you travel the inside passage. Let’s say you are traveling North from Prince Ruppert BC (much cheaper than leaving from Bellingham WA). Buy your ticket from Prince Rupert to Katchikan, that’s all. It’s about a 6-hour run.

When you arrive in Ketchikan drive your RV into town and find a camground. Stay in Ketchikan 2 days or 2 weeks, make your own schedule. Make syre you do a flight-seeing trip with Taquan Air http://www.taquanair.com/ over Misty Fjords National Monument.  When you have seen everything you want to see in Ketchikan head over to the ferry ticket office and get a ticket to the next ferry stop in Wrangell.  You should have no trouble getting on the next ferry out.

We traveled the ferry system for three months making our “RV’ing Alaska’s Inside Passage” video and were never on a ferry that was more than half-full. The only place you need a ferry reservation for is if you are leaving from Bellingham WA.

The ferry ride to Wrangell is about 6-hours too. Get off the ferry and head over to Alaska Waters RV Park (www.alaskawaters.com/). Wilma will set you up with a nice campsite and a tour to see the bears at AnAn Bear Observatory. This is the best and least expensive place to get up close and personal with bears in Alaska. You’ll see both black and brown bears, which is unusal.

After you see everything you want in Wrangell, get the next ferry to Pettersburg, only a 3-hour ferry ride away. Pettersburg is a Norweigen fishing village without cruise ship visitors, so you get to see a “real” Alaskan working town.

From there you can go on to Sitka, Juneau, Skagway, Haines and more. Take your time and make your own schedule. You’ll have a great trip! Happy travels.
