Weight on Springs

Q: My brother and I have GM dually pickups and 12ó-foot slide-in campers. My brother feels that when he isn’t using his pickup and camper he should raise the camper up on its jacks to take the weight off the pickup springs. My feeling is that many smaller motorhomes are built on similar chassis and the weight is never taken off the springs for the life of the unit. What are your thoughts?

A: There is no reason to remove the weight off the springs, but you should not load them beyond their ratings. Once in a while, a spring flattens out, but it’s not that common. Your observation of motorhome springs is right on target.
