In 2003 I was driving 750 miles round trip from Winter park, FL, to Andalusia, AL, trying to start the Alabama Hiking Trail Society, a state-wide hiking trail organization. A friend gave me a slide-in camper in which to sleep deep in the Conecuh National Forest that doubled as a ‘hunt camp’ and store room. The drive was too much every few days so I moved closer: to Tallahassee, FL, which reduced the drive to 400 miles.
After a few months I stopped by an RV dealership in Pensacola, FL, and walked into a pre-owned motorhome that had just been cleaned inside and out. It was better looking than my apartment! And furnished I left feeling that I couldn’t drive such a large vehicle. But the salesman was persistent and I became the owner of a 34′ Windsport. My arms ached after driving 80 miles to the campground in Alabama towing my Jeep. I was reluctant to drive it further but eventually drove it to my sisters’ in South Florida, a distance of 500 miles, and then back.
After this drive I lost all fear of driving a large vehicle. Owning and living in a motorhome has been a wonderful experience for me.
