This is one of those places you don’t hear much about. It requires driving some distance on a gravel road, and if you see it in the middle of the day you’re likely to be severely unimpressed. But catch this valley in the warm, short-lived light of a rising or setting sun and it will take your breath away.
This is a state park sort of sandwiched between Bryce Canyon National Park to the west and Grand Escalante Staircase National Monument to the south and east. The gravel road leading to this site runs south out of the little town of Canyonville on Highway 12. There is a campground in the state park (no hookups and very little shade) which can get pretty warm on a mid-summer’s day. More than a mile above sea level, the air does generally cool down somewhat in the evening. If you want hookups–like for your air conditioner–try the KOA in Canyonville.
