Superlative Stays—Mystic, Connecticut

Sitting on the Atlantic Coast, Mystic, Connecticut, hasn’t forgotten its deep seafaring roots. The town was a leading New England seafaring village dating back to the early 1700s and, lest anyone forget that, the Mystic Seaport has gathered and fastidiously restored over 60 heritage commercial buildings from those days. With more than 500 authentic watercraft on site, the seaport lays claim to being the world’s largest maritime museum.

This is also a good place to learn to sail and enjoy authentic sea shanties and sea songs during the annual Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival each summer. A few more Mystic facts:

• The Mystic Aquarium is home to 3,500 sea creatures including outdoor exhibits for Stellar sea lions and Beluga whales. The aquarium offers learning cruises of the surrounding waters, one of many chances to explore the Connecticut coast aboard ship. Boat rides range from sightseeing cruises of the Mystic River on coal-fired steamboats to tall ship sailing adventures out to sea.

• Land lubbers can stroll around Olde Mistick Village, created to resemble the postcard-quaint New England towns of the 18th century. Shops and restaurants mingle with village greens and duck ponds. For 21st century entertainment, two of the world’s largest casinos—Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods—are less than 15 minutes from town.

• Feeling peckish? Mystic Pizza—the restaurant that was featured in the 1988 movie of the same name—still serves up delicious slices with a variety of toppings.
