Load ’er Up

This is an easy way for one person to load his/her boat. All lumber used in this application is pressure-treated 2 × 4s. Extend the new roof-rack boards about 6 inches past the existing roof rack on you vehicle.

Connect the 12-foot-long ramp boards with hinges (pins removed), and use smaller-diameter pins (nails work well) for the new hinge pins. Drill holes every 6 inches up the ramp boards, a little larger in diameter than a good-size Phillips screwdriver.

Lay the boat on the ramps, slide up one side and put the screwdriver in a hole to hold it, and then slide the other side up and insert a screwdriver to hold it in place. Repeat until the boat is atop the vehicle’s roof rack.
Then attach the ramp boards to the roof rack boards for transport using bolts and locking nuts.
