Leveling the Comet

It would have had to been the summer of ’65 and I was the lucky grandchild to camp with Grandpa & Grandma and their little white poodle dog, Fifi. They owned a small Comet camper trailer. It wasn’t much bigger than the length of their pickup.

I remember their leveling technique very well. Once we stopped, Grandma would drag out the cast iron skillet, light the cookstove, and would plop a scoop of shortening in the skillet. We’d wait until it melted and once the liquid was level, she’d call out to Grandpa and he’d set the jacks. Grandma would then start peeling potatoes and Grandpa and I went fishing. Nothing smelled better in the campground than fried potatoes and onions.

Great memories!!
