Lake Placid Stands at the Crossroads of Florida

In 2012, Reader’s Digest named the tiny little community of Lake Placid in scenic Central Florida the “Most Interesting Town” in America, and once you’re here, it’s easy to see why.

Located in what’s often referred to as the Caladium Center of the World, this picture-perfect town is home to 27 freshwater lakes and its downtown core is home to 46 colorful large-scale murals, which adorn a range of historic buildings. But this is no bustling township. The local population tops out at less than 2,000 people, making this small and friendly community a treat to explore on foot and a true breath of fresh air for anyone seeking some solitude and relaxation.

With its abundance of lakes both big and small, it’s no surprise that water sports and fishing are among the town’s most popular activities. Moderate temperatures and more than 200 days of annual sunshine mean the boat launches are always busy, the shorelines are always buzzing and the local trails are always well traveled. Anglers come from miles around to fish for large mouth bass, bluegills, shell crackers and crappies.

The town is also well situated: Sitting directly at the crossroads of U.S. Route 27 (which runs north-south) and Florida State Road 70 (which runs east-west) it serves as the perfect base camp from which to branch out and explore Central Florida. Massive Lake Okeechobee lies just a few miles to the southeast, while Highlands Hammock State park lies just a few miles to the northwest.

The three big cities of Orlando, Miami and Tampa are also within easy reach—just two hours north to Orlando and Disney World, two hours west to Tampa and St. Petersburg, and three hours east to Miami and West Palm Beach.

This just might be the crossroads for the entire state of Florida. Small-town charm, big city access and Central Florida’s world-famous concentration of lush freshwater lakes make this town an absolute must-visit.
