Florida’s Silver Palms RV Resort and Naples Motorcoach Resort are set for snowbird season, despite the impact of Hurricane Irma earlier in the month.
Irma brought heavy wind, rain and flooding to much of Florida on September 10, but the two major Sunshine State RV resorts rode out the storm with minimal damage. Silver Palms RV resort in Okeechobee has reopened to both owners and guests, while Naples will undergo some repairs before reopening.
Representatives from the resorts, which are part of the Sunland RV Resorts chain of RV properties, reported that staff and guests who were staying at Silver Palms and Naples during the storm were unharmed. Although the storm knocked out power to both resorts, electricity was restored as of September 18. Damage in adjacent areas has temporarily made it dangerous and, in some cases, impossible, for evacuated employees to return to work.
Resort officials say destruction was limited to landscaping that was blown around, some tiki roofs blowing off and some rising water levels that didn’t cause any flooding to the structures. Representatives say resorts benefitted from the resilience of park buildings, sturdy foundations and the proper upkeep from the resorts’ team of engineers and maintenance staff.
Because of the limits to the damage, the Florida Sunland resorts will be fully operational in time for the winter season. Some other Florida RV resorts haven’t been so fortunate and will need several months to repair the heavy damage sustained by the storm.
