Civil War Fields Meet Skydiving Thrills in Petersburg, Virginia

Reach new vacation heights in the town of Petersburg, Virginia, home to beautiful camping, Civil War History and skydiving thrills. Located near the confluence of the Appomattox and James rivers, the scenic town offers fishing and boating along historic waterways. Find a spot on the water or charter a boat to catch largemouth bass, bream, perch and more.

As its name implies, Picture Lake is a scenic body of water just south of Petersburg. Anglers can reel in hauls of bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish.

Civil War Past

At the Pamplin Historic Park, visitors can experience full immersion in Civil War history. A seven-gallery exhibit brings visitors face-to-face with fascinating relics from the conflict, with exhibits showcasing everything from paintings from the era to battlefield maps. The Battlefield Center showcases finds from the Breakthrough Battle of 1865, in which Union forces finally vanquished their Confederate opponents. State-of-the-art maps illustrate troop movements at various phases of the battle.

At the complex’s military encampment, costumed interpreters reenact the daily chores and tasks of soldiers and civilians from both sides. Visitors can interact with these highly trained interpreters for an unforgettable glimpse into the past. Find more historic sites at the Petersburg National Battlefield, site of the brutal siege of Petersburg. Known as the longest military even of the Civil War, this brutal struggle saw legendary generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee match wits as thousands of combatants made the ultimate sacrifice.

Virginia Motorsports Park

Prefer revving engines to regal generals? The Virginia Motorsports Park hosts a diverse menu of competition, from drag racing to truck and tractors pulls. Motocross races are organized for folks who prefer two-wheel action. In September, the venue hosts the Dinwiddie County Fair, where rides, games and exhibits dazzle attendees for days on end.

Sky High Fun

If you’d like to take your vacation thrills to the next level, the Virginia Skydiving Center offers a seasoned hand. Boasting 20 years of experience in the sport, the center offers instructor-assisted deployment jumps and tandem skydiving experience jumps for beginners. The picturesque drop zone just outside of Richmond will give visitors a nice landing.
