All Went Wrong in Rented Travel Trailer 1970

Was on one of my 1st jobs out of nursing school (1970) when a co-worker suggested going on a vacation together–to Padre Island TX. Once we got there, my co-worker could afford the hotel cost, but I couldn’t so we decided to rent a travel trailer. WELL–1st I had to get a hitch put on my car (which took most of the day). Finally got the trailer & headed to buy things like sheets, towels, cheap pots/pans, dish towels etc. etc. THEN-to the grocery store for, you guessed it, EVERYTHING. Got to the campground on the beach at dusk. BEAUTIFUL, I think. Went to hook up the water, NO hose. OK–the electricity–NO adaptor. Sewer–NO hose. OK–there’s gas tanks–turn on the tank to have gas lighting–NO mantle (they had lanterns in RV’s back then)–flame shot right up the inside wall. Turned that off without a major fire–whew!! By then I was in tears and my “older” co-worker was VERY quiet.

SO–I could at least have a cup of coffee from the thermos–in the car. I went to the car – grabbed the thermos & promptly dropped it.

Broke the inside to pieces–NOT even COFFEE!!!!!

Went back to the trailer, made the bed (after figuring out how to get rid of the table). By now it’s really dark, the breeze is blowing. I’m tired so I flop my bottom on the bed and CRASH!!!!!!!!! The cinder block under the tongue broke in half and the trailer crashes to the ground.

I was really in tears—my co-worker LAUGHING hysterically. I was SO MAD. In between hysterics—all she could say was “someday you will laugh about all this”. My response–“I WILL NOT”.

Needless to say–it’s one of my funniest memories now after 46yrs as an operating room nurse.
