You recommend carrying two spare tires when traveling in Alaska. Do you carry just the tire or do you carry tire & wheel.
Do you carry them in the storage area of your RV or do you carry them in your tow vehicle.
Unless you plan on traveling on a lot of gravel back-roads I don’t think you need two spares. A good rule of thumb is to take one spare for each vehicle you have, one for the RV and one for the tow vehicle for example. I really doubt that you will be unlucky enough have two flat tires before you can get the first one fixed. There are tire stores about every 50-miles or so on the route. Carrying the spare tire will be enough back-up but feel free to include the wheel if you have space. I don’t know about you, but space is always at a premium when we travel. We had Born Free make us a rack on top of our RV for a spare tire.
I’ve been driving to Alaska for years and I’ve never had a flat-tire, and that includes going up and down the rugged Dalton Highway from Fairbanks to Prudoe Bay, 415-miles of the worst gravel road you will ever encounter. I went up the Dalton in a Class-A and came back in a Class-E! That’s rough! In fact, I was standing outside the Prudoe Bay airport one day when a Class-C unit drove up to the front door. It was a family of four who had just driven up the Dalton. The wife got out of the rig and kissed the husband and kids good-by. She then went inside the airport and bought an airline ticket home because she refused to drive back down the Dalton. It takes one rough road to break-up a family!
If I buy a ticket from Prince Rupert(PR) to Haines the price for a under 21′ is $602. If I buy individual tickets for each stop it would be considerably more. I would like to be able to buy one ticket and be able to get on and off at any stop along the way if possible. Can we do that?
It will cost you a bit more to stop along the way on the ferry route, but is worth every penny for the great places you get to visit. If I was traveling from Prince Rupert to Haines I would be sure to at least make stops in Ketchikan, Wrangell, and Juneau. Of coarse the more stops the better! You can get something called an Alaska Pass for about $160 that will allow you to make three stops on your PR to Haines route.
The prices change all the time so the best thing to do is go to the Alaska Marine Highway System http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/ web site. If you can figure out the on-line system you are a better person than I am! I usually just break down and call the 800-number.
