Camp Near American History

The center of your family vacation to explore Civil War history should start in Gettysburg, PA. The Confederate States of America, led by Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, were actually winning the war between the states until they accidentally met up with the Union Army of the Potomac. Commanded by General George Meade in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, this was the largest and bloodiest battle of the war, in the first week of July 1863. Gettysburg Campground is a great location to camp on the same hallowed ground where many of these American heroes from the North and the South fought for their ideas to keep America strong, great and united.

Your Tour Should Start at the Gettysburg National Military Park and Visitors Center

The National Park offers a full complement of summer ranger programs (mid-June through mid-August), battlefield walks, ranger-led battle walks, evening campfire programs, and special events on weekends with living history groups and band concerts. Your family can explore the area by driving through the National Park on your own with a CD that you can purchase at the Gettysburg Campground office. If you would prefer a guided trip, the great bus tours offered by the Gettysburg Battlefield Tours put you on the famous Double Decker Bus with a professional Licensed Battlefield Guide. Your family will be able to relive the Battle of Gettysburg, as told by the most knowledgeable historic storytellers in the area.

Make your camping reservations at Gettysburg Campground early for the 156th Anniversary Gettysburg Civil War Battle Reenactment July 1, 2, & 3, 2019. Every summer, thousands of enactors gather here just to take part in this annual event. And if you miss out on this experience, you will be able to visit with period actors every weekend during the summer on the streets of this historic town. The Civil War comes alive before your very eyes—something you can’t get by reading a book or viewing on a tablet or smartphone. Some of the enactors camp right alongside you at Gettysburg Campground!
