Easy Modifications for Your Camper

Lucky for me I’ve got a pretty handy hubby, so he’s been able to make some small modifications to out travel trailer to make life a little easier. We have a spilt bathroom (I guess that’s what they call it) where the tub and potty are on one side of the camper and the mirror and sink are on the other. The only drawback is, there’s no place to put extra toilet paper, washcloths, clothes, etc.

Good place to put clean clothes when in the shower

So Hubby took a shelf that sits over the toilet in a stick house and modified it to fit over the toilet in the trailer. The poles that hold the shelf are spring loaded, so this was an easy install. He also installed one of these soap dispensers in the shower. Now we don’t have shampoo and soap bottles bouncing around in the tub when we go down the road.

This isn’t really a modification, just a nifty way to use the space under the dinette seat. Hubby measured the space and then found an under the bed tote to fit. This way I can store all my pots and pans under there, all I have to do is slide out the tote. We also have one in the front of the camper in the storage part, that way things don’t get lost/stuck in the middle.

this long tote makes the most of the under the seat storage

Hubby also made a step for the outside out of a grill from an old gas grill someone was throwing out. He simply built a box out of a 2×4 and attached the grate from the grill to the top. This way when you step on this before you step into the camper, a lot of the dirt and stones that are on the bottom of you shoes gets knocked off, which keeps the inside of the camper cleaner (bonus points to Hubby)

handy step

I love to hear/see how other campers have made modifications to help then enjoy their camping experience. I hate to make generalizations, but it seems like there’s a lot of campers out there who are pretty clever when it comes to making their camper their own. Thankfully they also seem to be happy to share these modifications with others. So what’s been your favorite modification you’ve done?

Diane~ This shelf did have the spring loaded bars with it. We’ve had it for a few years and just never got it put up in the house (see procrastination does pay off) I think we bought it at wal-mart

Karen~ we don’t full-time, so I wouldn’t be able to answer those questions for you. I believe Dana T full times with her family

WE ARE SERIOUSLY THINKING OF SELLING OUR HOUSE AND GOING FULLTIME. LOOKING AT WORKAMPER CAMPGROUNDS. DO ANY OF YOU DO THAT AND DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS? WAS LOOKING AROUND HOUSE WE JUST REDID 2 YEARS AGO AND AM REALIZED HOW MANY THINGS WE CAN’T TAKE. VERY NERVOUS. WHAT DO I DO WITH ALL I CAN’T TAKE AND PLUS WE HAVE ONLY A SMALL 26″ TT, HOPING TO GET A 5TH WHEEL ASAP BUT NOT SOON ENOUGH AFTER WE SELL THE HOUSE.

The shelves in the bathroom are a great idea. I’ve been looking for something just like this. Where did you get the spring loaded poles? Were they part of the shelving unit or was that the modification?
