At the end of each year, members of the First Nova Scotia Apple Valley Campers get in the Good Samaritan spirit by making a $500 donation, and 2012 was no exception. Last year the Good Sam chapter gave to a school for students with learning disabilities on the Bay of Fundy coast.

During the year, the chapter earned $500 for the Landmark East School by raising money at its annual Thanksgiving campout and staging raffles at the Atlantic Canada Samboree. Chapter president Ernie McMurrer presented the check to the school’s Scott Walker (pictured).

True to its name, the First Nova Scotia Apple Valley Campers chapter was the first Good Sam group chartered in Nova Scotia. Twenty years after its first campout, the chapter now brings together 16 RVing families and two families that attend non-camping get-togethers. From May through October, chapter members meet at monthly campouts, and each summer they attend the Atlantic Canada Samboree.

Come fall, the chapter invites other Atlantic Canada Good Sam chapters to a Thanksgiving campout at the Hants County fairgrounds in Windsor, Nova Scotia. Together they enjoy a weekend of games, entertainment and camaraderie while raising money at craft sales and a musical auction and giving thanks at a turkey feast.

In addition to the Landmark East School, recipients of the chapter’s annual check have included the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Diabetic Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Palliative Care Association, the Parkinson Society, Shriners International and Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Middleton, Nova Scotia.

Atlantic Canada has nine Good Sam chapters including three in Nova Scotia, five in New Brunswick and one on Prince Edward Island.
