Welcome to Minnesota

Known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” (there are 11,842, to be exact), Minnesota encompasses more shoreline than Hawaii, Florida and California combined. It’s clear the locals don’t take these bodies of water for granted. The state has the nation’s highest rates of boat ownership and fishing license purchases per capita. Visitors should follow the locals’ lead, as the North Star State promises intrepid hikers, boaters, anglers and snow sport enthusiasts the outdoor adventure of a lifetime. For those who prefer urban luxuries, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul serve up all the amenities you desire.

A Wild Wonderland

Make a splash in one of Minnesota’s many lakes and rivers. Paddle along canoe or kayak routes down the St. Croix River and Lake Superior, or hop on a boat and head to Voyageurs National Park, a state jewel that can only be accessed by water. Boasting 30 lakes, including four large ones, this 218,054-acre park blends history with scenic beauty. Centuries ago, during the fur trade, French-Canadian traders transported fur by paddling in massive birch canoes. Today, the area is the perfect spot for swimming, fishing, hiking and wildlife viewing.

Nestled in northeast Minnesota, Superior National Forest seduces travelers with more outdoor opportunities. One of the most popular areas of the park is Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. With 1,500 miles of canoe routes and more than 1,000 lakes and streams, this area lets you sail or paddle to your heart’s content. Anglers will want to grab their rods as walleye, northern pike and smallmouth bass are plentiful here. Wildlife lovers can enjoy the International Wolf Center deep in the forest. Observe the resident wolf pack and learn about these incredible creatures at this one-of-a-kind education center.

The North Shore Drive is a must for those who want to experience Minnesota’s stunning beauty by vehicle. Starting in Duluth and ending in Thunder Bay, Ontario, this route lets you soak up dazzling views of Lake Superior.

Twice the Fun in the Twin Cities

While Minnesota’s wilderness attracts outdoorsy folk, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul lure those with a passion for history, sports, art and culture. Boasting old frontier-town character, the state capital of St. Paul is filled with historic buildings. Step back in time as you stroll by the Renaissance-style Cathedral of St. Paul, Victorian houses on Summit Avenue and the Landmark Center, an arts and cultural hub that resembles a castle. You can also delve into the state’s heritage at the State Capitol, Minnesota History Center or Fort Snelling.

Minneapolis’s hip, trendy vibe offers just as many, if not more, things to see and do. Dedicated to contemporary art, the Walker Art Center features a theater, cinema and 11 galleries. Just outside lies the 11-acre Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, home to the famous “Spoonbridge and Cherry” installation.

The Mall of America is the largest shopping destination in the U.S. and a great place to stock up on a new wardrobe as the state imposes no sales tax on clothing and shoes.
