Welcome to Georgia

Founded as the last of the original 13 colonies and named after King George, the Peach Tree State is a virtual crossroads in American history. Georgia has played pivotal roles in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. After each dramatic chapter in its history, Georgia has emerged stronger and more relevant than before.

From the Blue Ridge Mountains of Northern Georgia to the epic ocean views of the southeastern coast, natural beauty abounds across the state. The landscape takes a more metropolitan and no-less pleasing shape in the skyscrapers of the major hub of Atlanta. No matter where you go, delightful Southern culture, flavorful cuisine and warm hospitality welcome visitors.

Waterfalls and Wonders

Known by the Cherokee as the “Land of a Thousand Waterfalls,” Northern Georgia is a destination for hikers seeking tall cascades. Three of the highest waterfalls in the eastern U.S. are found here. Amicalola Falls State Park is home to the highest falls in Georgia, with waters tumbling 729 feet down a rocky bluff. Tallulah Gorge State Park is another outdoors hotspot. Walk the suspension bridge over the 1,000-foot canyon for heart-stopping views of the river and waterfalls below.

Enjoy great new adventures on Georgia riverbanks and ocean shores. With sandy beaches and the alluring sound of waves crashing on the shoreline, the Atlantic beaches of the east coast are top draws.

Inland, the robust current of the Chattahoochee River entices kayakers, rafters and canoe enthusiasts. Hefty bass tug on fishing lines at Lake Seminole and High Falls Lake, while deep-sea fishing enthusiasts can charter boats off the coast.

Sweet Savannah and Hot Atlanta

Georgia’s oldest city might just be one of its prettiest. Savannah’s historic charm, Southern hospitality and natural beauty make it a relaxing retreat. Spanish moss hangs from the limbs of arching oaks along the cobblestone streets of the Historic District, where colorful, well-preserved mansions hold secrets of the past. Forsyth Park and Bonaventure Cemetery are picturesque places to stroll, while just a short drive away, Skidaway Island State Park and Tybee Island preserve natural beauty.

Host of the 1996 Olympics, the vibrant city of Atlanta buzzes with family entertainment. The World of Coca-Cola, the Georgia Aquarium and Centennial Olympic Park are visitor favorites. Get a dose of historical insight with a visit to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site and the Center for Civil and Human Rights. A number of sports arenas, museums, theaters and family attractions ensure you’ll never run out of things to do in this world-class city.

Hear the sounds of America’s souful musical past in Macon, home to Little Richard, Otis Redding and the Allman Brothers. Museums and musical venues in the city pay tribute to iconic perfomers.

Ocean Adventures and Civil War

Take the ferry to Cumberland Island National Seashore to explore the natural coastal landscape. Watch the feral horses that run free along the sandy shores and through forests. Tour the historic structures to learn the story of the island’s earliest inhabitants and visitors.

Fun for the whole family can be found about 17 miles east of Atlanta at Stone Mountain, named for the massive quartz dome that rises over the landscape below. Check out the Confederate Memorial Carving etched into the rock’s side.

The surrounding woodlands are contrasted by colorful theme park attractions. Fifteen miles of trails wind through the terrain, with the mile-long climb to the top offering expansive views.
