Relive history along this stretch of the Columbia River that helped guide Lewis and Clark on the final leg of their expedition to the Pacific in late 1805. From Pendleton’s pioneer style to Portland’s classic cool, there’s plenty to see when old meets new on your own Oregon adventure.

 

1 .Pendleton

From the neon lights and cowboy hats that fill the 125-year-old Rainbow Café, to the custom handmade boots at Staplemans Boots & Leather, Pendleton is a city that truly prides itself on its Wild West heritage. The world-famous Pendleton Round-Up in early September is one of the hallmark events on the rodeo circuit, with thousands of spectators enjoying four days of cowboys, crafts, concerts and more.

2. The Dalles

Drive 131 miles, 2 hours • Entertainment, History, Nature, Outdoor Recreation

Nestled on the banks of the Columbia River, The Dalles has the feel of a uniquely Oregonian destination with ample of opportunities to explore the outdoors without sacrificing modern-day comforts. Visit the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center for a truly immersive look at the challenges and triumphs experienced by Lewis and Clark. Exhibits also are dedicated to Native American culture and basketry.

 

3. Portland

Drive 80.2 miles, 1 hour, 24 minutes • Food, Nature, Outdoor Recreation

Home to one of the country’s best dining scenes, finest coffee shops and endless boutiques, getting lost in downtown Portland is a pastime all its own. And getting “out” of the city is even easier. Just head to Forest Park, on the west bank of the Willamette River (one of the largest urban parks in the country, with 80 miles of manicured trails).

4. Astoria

Drive 101 miles, 2 hours, 14 minutes • Food, History, Nature, Quirky

With Victorian-style homes spilling out toward the rugged coastline, Astoria oozes an authentic, fishing-village charm. Real history buffs will know to head straight to Fort Clatsop, the outpost where Lewis and Clark spent a winter after finally reaching the Pacific Ocean. Astoria has been dubbed “Hollywood North” because of the many films shot on location here. Fans of “Free Willy” and “The Goonies” will recognize the town’s distinctive scenery. Celebrate “Goonies Day” here every June 7.
