Maryland packs a beautiful coastline, charming towns and ample recreation options in a relatively small geographic region. This itinerary encompasses the Atlantic shoreline and the coast of Chesapeake Bay.

 

1. Ocean City

Starting Point • Entertainment, Food, Nature

Ocean City is renowned for its boardwalk, a 3-mile-long stretch along the beach that’s lined with shops, restaurants and amusement attractions, including a carousel dating back to 1902. While in the area, don’t miss a visit to Assateague Island, a strip of land just south of town that’s home to a large herd of wild ponies along with diverse bird species.

 

2. Salisbury

Drive 30.3 miles, 42 minutes • Food, History, Nature

This little town is home to the Salisbury Zoological Park, which puts a focus on species conservation. Families may also be interested in the 262-acre Pemberton Historical Park, home to the historic Pemberton Hall, which dates back to 1741. The city boasts has a number of microbreweries, each with attached pubs. Look for brewing companies with colorful names like Evolution, Tall Tales and Rubber Soul.

3. Rock Hall

Drive 54.8 miles, 1 hour, 10 minutes • Entertainment, Food, Outdoor Recreation

Dubbed “the Pearl of the Chesapeake,” Rock Hall is a lovely waterfront community on the Chesapeake Bay. Here you’ll find lots of small restaurants serving up catch-of-the-day and delicious oysters, plenty of live music performances, and ample sailing and charter fishing opportunities. Rock Hall’s thriving arts community features a two-weekend-long studio tour held every autumn. Biking and walking paths lead visitors to scenic ocean views.

 

4. Woodbine

Drive 110 miles, 2 hours • Entertainment, Food, Nature

This rural area allows travelers to relax amid nature within minutes of exciting urban centers. The area’s rolling hills are filled with treasures: local wineries include the Elk Run Vineyards & Winery, named one of the Top 100 Wineries on the East Coast. With Baltimore to the east and Washington D.C. to the south, you’ll never have a shortage of exciting side trips.
