Places Welcoming You

Home to the Rocky Mountains, lush forests and gorgeous lakes, Idaho is a nature lover’s paradise. With an abundance of idyllic places to relax in the outdoors, Idaho is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

1.   Boise

Starting Point • Food, Nature, Outdoor Recreation

Although Boise is the largest city in the state, this capital city is not your typical metropolis — its main attractions are the outdoors. A trip to Boise isn’t complete without a visit to the World Center for Birds of Prey, where you can explore the incredible raptor species in the wild. Head back into town to try some craft bourbon whiskey at one of the local distilleries or, if you prefer, a pint of one of Boise’s fine beers at the breweries scattered across the city.

2.   Cascade

Drive 76 miles, 1 hour 36 minutes • Nature, Outdoor Recreation, Sports

Though quite rural, Cascade is everything an outdoor enthusiast could dream of. Nestled on the southeast shore of Lake Cascade, the town of Cascade is the perfect home base to explore the area’s forests and mountains. Grab your fishing pole and head out to the lake. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, try your hand kayaking at Kelly’s Whitewater Park, where controlled rapids are sure to give you a wild — but safe — ride.

3.   McCall

Drive 30 miles, 39 minutes • Outdoor Recreation, Sports

If you’re looking for miles of hiking and exploring, McCall is the place for you. Neighboring Ponderosa State Park covers nearly 1,000 acres and is full of quiet and gorgeous places to hike, mountain bike, swim, fish and more. Head back into town to embark on a cruise around Payette Lake, where you can take in the views of this natural paradise. Be sure to come back in the winter months when the state park turns into a snowshoe and cross-country skiing dream. McCall’s nearby resorts bring tourists in from all over to race down the area’s powder-coated mountains every winter.
