Stretching across the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia boasts some of the world’s most spectacular natural scenic beauty, from rugged coastlines to mile upon mile of gorgeous old-growth forest. Follow this itinerary along Highway 99, also known as the Sea-to-Sky Highway, to see the best of what the region offers.

1. Vancouver

Starting Point • Entertainment, Food, Nature, Outdoor Recreation

Start your trip in Vancouver’s Stanley Park, just northwest of downtown. This vast expanse of parkland is home to an estimated half-a-million evergreen trees and is laced with numerous trails for hiking and mountain biking. Attractions here include a family-friendly water park and a miniature railway, along with the Nature House (an ecology interpretation center), an aquarium, two beaches, a swimming pool and plenty of restaurants. Granville Island, accessible by both car and ferry, boasts a public Market with vendors selling everything from fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms to handicrafts.

2. Squamish

Drive 39.8 miles, 58 minutes • Nature, Outdoor Recreation, Sports

On your way out of town, don’t miss a visit to the 230-foot-high Capilano Suspension Bridge, a 15-minute drive north of Vancouver. Squamish lives up to its nickname as the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada, and it’s a haven for mountain biking enthusiasts, with upwards of 600 trails used for the sport (of course there are plenty of spots to hike, too). Don’t miss the Sea-to-Sky Gondola, which makes the trip up to Summit Lodge, located nearly 3,000 feet above sea level, in about 10 minutes.

3. Whistler

Drive 36.5 miles, 47 minutes • Outdoor Recreation

Hugely popular with outdoorsy types, Whistler offers a wide range of things to do throughout the year. Winter activities include skiing and snowboarding, sleigh rides, ice climbing, snowshoeing and even dog sledding and winter zip lining. If you’re here in the summertime, you’ll find ample opportunities for white-water rafting, mountain biking, rock climbing and even bungee jumping. And no matter what time of year you visit, be sure to check out the Whistler PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, a glass-bottomed gondola offering 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains.
