Pocono Mountains

Nature blends seamlessly with civilization in a perennial getaway

The wooded hills and lush valleys of the Pocono Mountains region deliver a slew of nature-filled activities just a few hours’ drive from the East Coast’s major urban centers. With precipitous peaks, crystalline lakes and meadows that erupt with wildflowers in spring, this idyllic region has long attracted nature lovers, active families and honeymooners.

The region encompasses the Delaware State Forest, including six designated natural areas, seven state parks and 17 state game lands. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is on the eastern edge of the Poconos and includes a further 70,000 acres of wilderness. Along with fishing, hiking, hunting and a robust lineup of snow sport activities, this is where childhood memories are made and timeless vacation rituals heartedly embraced. Satisfying the cultural itch of adventurous visitors, the cluster of quaint small towns that dot the landscape provides a rigorous program of quality theater revues and intriguing museums, as well as a range of upscale and casual dining options, wine bars, cafés and brew pubs.

Something for Everyone

Breaking out of their stereotype as a haven for honeymooners, the Poconos serve up a diverse menu of diversions. NASCAR racing, for one, has established a major presence at the Pocono Raceway, where top drivers Navigate an angular course known as the Tricky Triangle.

Lovers of outdoor sports can indulge in thrill-a-minute whitewater rafting, championship golf courses, rustic dude ranches and expansive amusement and theme parks. Camelback Mountain Adventures offers zip lining, rides and more. Slow things down a bit by booking an appointment at one of the area’s spas.

The town of Milford is the spot for musical events, an annual fall film festival, quaint shops and galleries. The Victorian town of Jim Thorpe, named after the Native American Olympic gold medalist, is not only at the heart of the East Coast’s bicycling scene but also showcases historic mansions preserving the architecture of the region. Just north of Jim Thorpe, the Lehigh Gorge State Park offers trails that wind through a scenic and lush valley.
