Welcome to South Carolina

There’re no two ways about it—South Carolina is a quintessentially Southern state. From its ornate antebellum mansions and vast tracts of wild, untamed swampland, to its sleepy towns and down-to-earth classic American charm, the Palmetto State is undeniably historic and nostalgia-inducing.

Most visitors find themselves gravitating to the state’s Atlantic coast, home to popular spots like cobblestone-strewn, historic Charleston, sandy Myrtle Beach and golf-happy Hilton Head Island. Further inland, the state capital of Columbia sits on the edge of the Piedmont Plateau’s rolling hills and scenic uplands, and within easy driving distance of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Animal lovers will want to check out Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia, Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach, the Waccatee Zoo in Myrtle Beach and the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston. If you’re traveling with kids, pay a visit or two to Family Kingdom Amusement Park in Myrtle Beach, Wild Water and Wheels in Surfside Beach, and Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Waterpark in Charleston.

Other highlights around the state include Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Myrtle Beach, Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet and Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum in Mount Pleasant.

Adventure

White sand beaches line the South Carolina coast, and from there the state’s geography climbs steadily westward—from the low fertile flatlands of the coast to the rolling hills of the Piedmont Plateau to the forested foothills and humble peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains. So whether you’re searching for a place to catch some rays, cast your fishing rod or hike through woodland trails, the Palmetto State has it.

Along the coast, most visitors find themselves gravitating to a 60-mile stretch known as the Grand Strand, which encompasses well-known beachfront communities like Myrtle Beach, Garden City, Little River and Murrells Inlet.

If you’re a sports fan, you’ve got the legendary Carolina Cup in Camden (where you can enjoy world-class steeplechase horse racing), the Bojangles’ Southern 500 NASCAR event (considered one of NASCAR’s toughest races) and Myrtle Beach Bike Week (a 10-day event full of motorcycle racing, live music, and street festivities).
