1. New Castle

Starting Point • History

Cobblestone streets and impressive townhomes cultivate colonial ambiance of New Castle. This city on the Delaware River lures visitors to scenic Battery Park or First State National Historic Park, both commemorating the fledgling democracy. New Castle’s colonial era homes include the Georgian mansion known as Amstel House, built in the 1700s. Another is Dutch House, which takes its visitors back to New Castle’s 17th century seafaring days as a newly founded port. Historic Immanuel Episcopal Church on the Green is another fascinating site.

2. Milford

64.2 miles, 1 hour, 25 minutes • Entertainment, Food, Nature

Summer officially begins in Delaware with Milford’s annual Brewgrass Music Festival. Live music, local food and, of course, samples from the region’s finest brews are the featured attractions. In addition to its handcrafted suds, the small town exudes old-style charm and a new, artsy edge. Its downtown offers a Riverwalk, with plenty of room for strolls or a bicycle excursion. Visitors can duck into an art gallery and restaurant; for outdoor lovers, there are two special finds—the DuPont and Abbott’s Mill Nature Centers.
