1. Kerrville

Starting Point • Entertainment, Outdoor Recreation

The beautiful Guadalupe River winds through the Hill Country town of Kerrville, providing stunning scenery and limitless recreation. Take in views of the river below and the hills above as you walk or bike along the River Trail, which connects two of the city’s riverside parks. If your trip is timed right, you can check out the Texas State Arts and Crafts Fair (May) and the Kerrville Folk Festival (May–June).

2. San Antonio

Among the tall towers of downtown San Antonio sits the Alamo, a small building with a big history. Visitors can tour the 300-year-old compound to learn about its beginnings as a Spanish mission and its pivotal role in the history of Texas. A few blocks away, the River Walk snakes along the banks of the San Antonio River, leading pedestrians to great shopping and entertainment venues. End your visit with a river cruise through the heart of town.

3. New Braunfels

Founded by a German prince in 1845, the small town of New Braunfels celebrates its Old World roots. Take a walking tour downtown, or visit the village at Conservation Plaza to explore some of the historical buildings. Enjoy a meal at one of the many German restaurants before treating yourself to a scrumptious strudel from Naegelin’s Bakery, the oldest bakery in Texas. Try delicious schnitzel at the Alpine House restaurant.

 

4. San Marcos

Feeling overheated? Swing by the small town of San Marcos and cool off in the clear, cold waters of the spring-fed San Marcos River. If you visit on graduation day, you might even see recent graduates from Texas State University taking a leap into the river, robes and all! Visitors can hop into dozens of local restaurants to explore regional flavors and world cuisines. From traveling food trucks to hometown brew pubs to exquisite fine dining, there’s something for everyone in San Marcos.

 

5. Austin

32.2 miles, 36 minutes •Entertainment, Food, Quirky

With a motto like “Keep Austin Weird,” you know you’re in for a treat in Texas’ capital city. Explore the thriving local music scene in one of Austin’s many venues. If you’re lucky, you might catch a taping of the PBS show “Austin City Limits” at The Moody Theater. Hit the downtown area to tour the Texas Capitol and the eclectic restaurants, shopping and galleries. If you find yourself in Austin in the heat of the summer, take the plunge into chilly Barton Springs. This legendary watering hole is fed by underground springs and stays between 68 and 70 degrees year-round. Take in a Country music show at the Broken Spoke, where Willie Nelson and other country icons have performed.
