1. Grove

Starting Point • History, Outdoor Recreation

The town of Grove is fishing haven, thanks to Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, ranked by angling experts as 15th in the country for bass fishing. Fishing enthusiasts from across North America come to catch largemouth bass and other fish varieties. In addition, many a family fish fry has served up Grand Lake crappie. Grand Lake also has the largest population in the world of Spoonbill Catfish, also known as Paddlefish. Take a ride on a riverboat or tour pioneer-themed Har-Ber Village Museum, the largest outdoor museum in the United States.

2. Tahlequah

59.7 miles, 1 hour, 14 minutes • Entertainment, History

Tahlequah is home to the Cherokee Nation and was ranked as one of the top 100 Best Small Towns in the United States by publisher Prentice Hall. The Cherokee Heritage Center offers visitors an authentic look back in time with a re-creation of the ancient Cherokee Village of Tsa-La-Gi. Street signs are written in both English and Cherokee at the Tahlequah Original Historic Townsite District, and gift shops, golf courses, casinos and other attractions make this area enjoyable for everyone.

 

3. Tulsa

Tulsa’s Guthrie Green the place to go for food-truck feasting. On Wednesdays, visitors will discover trucks serving everything from gourmet grill cheese sandwiches to mini-donuts to Mediterranean fare. The food changes every week, so forget about “same old thing” syndrome. When lunch is done, head out to enjoy Tulsa’s museums and entertainment venues as well as shopping—from bargain items to big-ticket luxuries. Golf courses, tennis courts, playground and miles of scenic biking and running trails abound.
